Linking Hearts, Hand in Hand - Successfully Completed!!

Linking Hearts, Hand in Hand was successfully completed on 22nd July 2006!! A total of more than 100 volunteers and 50 participants from SCAS took part in this meaningful event. This project is one of the biggest and most ambitious community service projects that we have embarked on, and it is headed by our committee's beloved Community Service section head Eddie Tan~ *claps* Of course, it wouldn't have been possible without the organizing committee, the Bartleyans, the volunteers from Singapore Polytechnic and the participants from SCAS.

The day camp was fun-filled and packed with exciting events for the participants. Upon arrival at PA holiday camp, we had a round of ice breaker games so that volunteers and participants could get to know each other better. Our enthusiastic game masters from Bartley Secondary School gave the event a good start by successfully engaging the participants in their lively games.

After knowing each other better, the 4 different teams embarked on a journey to complete the Mini Amazing Race where they were tasked to complete several challenges. The highlight of the day must have been the kayaking activity where participants from SCAS were given the opportunity to try kayaking with their partners. This experience must have been a valuable and rewarding one to the participants!

While some were doing kayaking, the others participated in the wheelchair race and the sandcastle building activity. Outdoor cooking followed after that, and participants were given a practical hands-on lesson on surviving outdoors using the most minimal.

The camp ended with a campfire, during which the most entertaining performances were presented by the Bartley NPCC and other volunteers.

Linking Hearts, Hand in Hand - Join us for a meaningful cause!

Hi everyone!

On 22nd July 2006, we'll be having a very meaningful event - Linking Hearts, Hand in Hand, and we hope that you can be part of this wonderful project! This project is a day camp jointly organized by Geylang Serai YEC and students from the Service Learning Club in Bartley Secondary School, for children from the Spastic Children's Association of Singapore (SCAS). It will take place at the PA Holiday Camp at Elias Road (Pasir Ris) and will last from morning till night.

Since this project aims to let the children from SCAS participate in activities that they cannot participate in school, programmes will include Kayaking, Outdoor Cooking, Mini Amazing Race and many others. To make this event possible, we need your help to act as volunteers to help the children in moving about and facilitating the games. So, if you are above 13 years old and are interested in volunteering for this meaningful cause, do send May an email at glint11@hotmail.com. We hope to see you!

Pelepah Waterfalls Trek

Hi everyone! Recently we completed the trek to Pelepah Waterfalls (17 - 18 June) at Kota Tinggi (JB). The trek was a relatively easy trek and it attracted a total of 19 participants, some of whom were beginners. As we left the CC in the morning, everyone was filled with much anticipation.

At the custom, we took a 1 1/2 hour ride to the foot of the waterfall and began our trek from there. The trek consisted of a mixture of different terrains - slippery rocks, sandy tracks and of course, we did some river crossing. Having cool river water run at your feet on a warm and sunny day was indeed a very refreshing and relaxing experience.

We trekked and trekked and we finally reached the 1st waterfall. The 1st waterfall was a rather huge one and we had the opportunity to have a dip in the pool at the waterfall and experience nature's powerful showerhead.

The 2nd and 3rd waterfalls are equally beautiful but due to the lack of time, we did not have time to play in the pools =( After about 4 hours of trekking, we finally reached our campsite. We pitched the tents together and the ladies went to wash up while the men whipped up a delicious meal of spagetti, ramen with corn beef, fried nuggets and seaweed chicken. If you have yet to experience bathing in the nature in the dark, you really have to try it! Imagine bathing in dim lights (from your torches) using very cold water and BIODEGRADABLE shampoo (courtesy of Bella the hot babe), how exotic can that be!!

After dinner, we sat around the cooking area to enjoy our dessert of ice cold longgan and fruit pudding and got to know each other better. The sky was clear that night, and we could see the numerous bright and shining stars as we chatted.

The next morning, we took an easier route down the hill and completed the trekk in about an hour's time. To make our adventure complete, we had to climb over the gate as we left the site.

Overall, the trek was an enjoyable and relaxing experience and I would recommend it to beginners who are interested to take up trekking. See you at our next trek!

"Women are always right and Men are never wrong"

"Women are always right and Men are never wrong" was brought to you by Geylang Serai Family Life Champion Committee, Geylang Serai Youth Executive Committee and Fei Yue Community Services. It was held on the 28th of May 2006 and it attracted a substantial amount of participants to the event.

The participants of the event were all satisfied with the talk, and i have to agree that the speaker was really good in engaging the crowd an offering inquisitive opinions on Men-Women / Women-Men relationship (the reason why i put both is so that people will not say that i put Men first).

I feel that such an event was really beneficial in helping couples develop a closer bonding after their many years of marriage or dating. Not only will this event help those who are facing difficulties in their relationship, this event was really an eye opener for me. Hearing all the problems that other Men and Women had about their spouses led me to reflect upon my own relationship, and find out that i was having a very enriching and satisfying relationship.

As such, we hope to organize more of these events, such as forums, talks and workshops to engage the community in the various fields and topics that arouses our interest. This will undoubtedly provide an avenue for people to learn more about the subtle little details of their everyday life.

Why Women are Always Right and Men are Never Wrong

Dear ladies, have you ever wondered why men never "listen" to what you are trying to to tell them? And for the gentlemen, have you ever wondered why your partners are continuously ranting about the little mishaps in their lives(and worse still, in a haphazard manner)? The talk on "Why Women are Always Right and Men are Never Wrong" aims to answer these questions and lighten the burden on these confused and frustrated souls.

The talk, which was held on 28th May 2006, attracted many participants ranging from young singles to old couples. The speaker, Ms Evelyn Khong, engaged the participants in interesting group discussions while providing useful insights and information. Two pieces of useful information for you: Men have specific compartments in their brains and can only retreive one at a time - they cannot multi-task. So ladies, do not expect your men to listen to you and watch his soccer game at the same time. And for the men, ladies have a much higher quota to fulfil in terms of the number of words they say per day, so let them talk when they need to.

Personally, I picked up useful information from the talk and the feedback was overwhelmingly good! Since such talks are well liked, we can look forward to organizing more of these in the future =)
